Search Rules & TipsThis search engine helps you find documents on the DRP website. Here's how it works: you tell the search utility what you're looking for by typing in keywords, phrases, or questions in the search box. The search utility responds by giving you a list of all the web pages in our site index relating to those topics. The most relevant content will appear at the top of your results. An OverviewHow To Use:
Here's an example:
Tip: Don't worry if you find a large number of results. In fact, use more than a couple of words when searching. Even though the number of results will be large, the most relevant content will always appear at the top of the result pages. Search BasicsWhat is an Index?Webster's dictionary describes an "index" as a sequential arrangement of material. Our index is a small but growing collection of our own Diesel Rebuild Parts website pages. The 'index' becomes larger as we add new material and pages to the website. When you use our search facility, you search the entire collection of pages using keywords or phrases. What is a Word? When searching, think of a word as a combination of letters and numbers. The search service needs to know how to separate words and numbers to find exactly what you want on the Internet. You can separate words using white space and tabs. What is a Keyword?A keyword is a specific word that is integral as an identifier to finding the information you require. As an example, if you are looking for Caterpillar engine parts, Caterpillar is a keyword that helps you identify the specific brand, engine helps identify the type of parts, and parts is a specifer for parts. Together, they make up a keyword phrase. What is a Phrase? You can link words and numbers together into phrases if you want specific words or numbers to appear together in your result pages. If you want to find an exact phrase, use "double quotation marks" around the phrase when you enter words in the search box. Example #1: To find remanufactured engines from JASPER, type "Jasper remanufactured engines" in the search box and search. You can also create phrases using punctuation or special characters such as dashes, underscore lines, commas, slashes, or dots. Example #2: Try searching for Simple Tips for More Exact SearchesSearches are case insensitive. Searching for "Fur" will match the lowercase "fur" and uppercase "FUR". By default, all searches are accent insensitive as well, but the administrator can change this setting. Accent sensitivity relates to latin characters like õ. Including or Excluding Words:To make sure that a specific word is always included in your search topic, place the plus (+) symbol before the key word in the search box. To make sure that a specific word is always excluded from your search topic, place a minus (-) sign before the keyword in the search box. Example: To find aftermarket parts for Cummins but not list pages with remanufactured components, try "cummins part +aftermarket -remanufactured". Expand your Search using Wildcards (*):By typing an * within a keyword, you can match up to four letters. Example: Try "worth*" to find worth, worthy, or worthful. Searching for Web Addresses:If your search term is a URL, like "http://www.automotivesearch.net/", some search engines will redirect you directly to the URL. The DRP site search engine is set to show pages containing the URL by default, as well as provide you the option to visit that page directly, as an option. This will be handy for those who might want to check if DRP has posted their link on the website. Fancy Features for Typical SearchesYou can search more than just text. Here are all of the other ways you can search on the DRP website: text:textFinds pages that contain the specified text in the body of a document. By way of comparison, searches without the "text:" attribute will scan the URL, title, links, and META tags as well as the document body. title:textFinds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title (which appears in the title bar of most browsers). The search title:Navistar would find pages with Navistar in the title. url:textFinds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL. Use url:caterpillar to find all pages that have the word caterpillar in the host name, path, or filename (in other words, anywhere within the complete URL). |
